Student Ministry Team

The mission of the Catholic Student Association:

is to uphold the values of the USCCB’s pastoral letter Empowered By the Spirit within the Columbia collegiate community by providing programming that promotes growth in the spiritual, emotional and academic lives of students through an intentional Catholic faith community that is rooted in the love of God and neighbor.

Catholic Student Association Ministry Team Executive Board

The members of the 2012-2013 board are:

  • Bridget Kapp, President – bridget@newmancentercolumbia.org
  • Sydney Stein, Executive Officer
  • David Kruse, Spirituality Director
  • Kayla Essner, Retreats Director
  • Emily Van Etten, Social Justice Director
  • Emily Pappas, Campus Evangelization Director
  • Andrea Brownrigg, Internal Evangelization Director

Student Leadership at Newman

Student Leadership in at the St. Thomas More Newman Center and Campus Ministry comes in many different forms.  In parish programs, we have leaders in music ministry, liturgical ministry, catechists in children’s religious education, and core members in the junior high and high school ministries.  The Catholic Student Association leads much of the student programming in campus ministry through the leadership of the Ministry Team Executive Board.

All student leaders at the Newman Center are considered part of student leadership in Campus Ministry.  The Program Coordinators as a part of the CSA Ministry Team develop all student programs at Newman.  Below are some of the larger component programs with student leadership:

Newman Volunteer Corps Board

The NVC Board is comprised of both student and resident parishioners who coordinate all programming for the Newman Volunteer Corps, which includes service, prayer, reflection, and education on justice issues.  For more information, contact the NVC Board at nvc@newmancentercolumbia.org.

CLC Core Teams

Catholic Life Communities (CLCs) are weekly faith sharing communities college students can interpret and discuss their life through the scope of their Catholic faith.  The CLC Core Teams are groups of students who plan and coordinate each weekly meeting.  There are Core Teams for each of the freshmen, sophomore, upperclassmen, and Greek CLCs.

Awakenings Retreat Team

Awakenings is the fall student-led retreat at the Newman Center.  A staff of approximately 30 students, led by the Awakenings Rector, plan and coordinate all aspects of the retreat.  To learn more about Awakenings, contact the Rector, Taylor Stevenson, at taylor@newmancentercolumbia.org.
